Do Rich Internet Applications Matter?
Anne Zelenka of Web Worker Daily has started an interesting discussion on the need for Rich Internet Applications:
Do you see a need for more richness in your Internet applications? What desktop applications will you continue to use into the indefinite future? What have you moved into the browser?
She mentions photo editing tools as an example. This supports the trend I discussed in my previous post, i.e. that typical desktop software applications are being moved to the Web as richer user interfaces become available.
I like Ryan Stewart’s response:
My idea of a good Rich Internet Application isn’t one that is all glitter and no substance. RIAs can be delivered inside the browser or they can be deployed on the desktop. The idea of putting a desktop like experience in the browser with RIAs is so that we can make them more powerful *and* easier to use.
Mike Potter at RIApedia says:
I wouldn’t classify YouTube as a rich Internet application – it’s a website that uses Flash to display content, but it’s not an application. Gmail, on the other hand, is definitely an RIA – its an application that would have been delivered as a desktop app not too long ago.

Good article. it doesnt matter whether Ajax scores over Flash or flex and vice versa but whether RIA helps target right content and also enhances better User experience
