This German article refers to an older IDC study on the ROI of Rich Internet Applications:
The full title is not mentioned, but I am assuming the article is referring to this IDC study from 2003.
According to the study, using a RIA increases sales by 25% to 50%. The study mentions an online hotel reservation application, where the number of users that abandoned their order halfway through the process dropped by 50% and the number of reservations increased to 89% compared to the previous year.
ECIN lists 3 companies where RIA technology helped to increase sales:
Neusser Ferien – a travel site,
Vodafone – offers a website to help customers select a cell phone,
BMW – the Mini website offered an interactive experience which helped to increase sales.
But as mentioned, the study is kind of old and it would be interesting to hear about recent reports.
I attended the Web 2.0 Forum organized by Vereon.ch this week.
The first surprise was the large binder I received at the registration desk with a printout of all the talks.
And the second surprise was no free WiFi.
The format was a bit challenging: 0.5 hr slots and more than 10 speakers. The talks were of different depth and quality and covered a wide range of topics.
I was pleased to see Swiss blogger Stefan Bucher, who talked about corporate blogging. He is the author of Weblog FAQ – widely referenced within the German-speaking blogging community.
Noteworthy from a RIA point of view:
SAP’s CTO for EMEA, Rolf Schumann, presented a talk on Web 2.0 within the business world.
The basic message being: we are in a global market which is changing faster than before. Factors such as the need for transparent customer relationship, a global distributed workforce, an increase in competitors and risks, and newly emerging technologies such as RFIDs are a challenge for large and small to medium-sized companies. And we need to tap into the possibilities that Web 2.0 offers by building enterprise-class Web 2.0 applications.
Although the user interface only makes up 10% of an application, it is gaining importance. UIs need to be accessible everywhere. And applications need to interact seamlessly with business processes.
RIA technologies that combine ubiquity and industrial strength offer key factors for enterprise class Web 2.0 applications and, thus, a way to stay ahead of competitors.
While Christian Pfeil is quite excited about Music Pinboard, Reto Kiefer points out that the Canoo demo app has some shortcomings if compared to a good Flash application. As Mike pointed out in an earlier post, Music Pinboard is a sample application, based on an alpha version of Java FX Script. As stated on the download page the purpose of this application was to explore a new and potentially interesting technology, and to share the knowledge acquired with the wider community by means of an experience report.
The event will focus on RIA and AJAX for enterprise applications and will provide a good overview of the opportunities and benefits.
About the speakers:
Canoo’s CTO, Bruno Schäffer will start the JUGS RIA event with an overview of the challenges that lie ahead. Bruno has been speaking at various conferences such as Jazoon, SD West and JavaOne.
Björn Müller is the founder of Casabac, which was later acquired by Software AG. He will share his experiences on using AJAX in an enterprise context.
I heard him speak at a W-JAX conference and there are some conference videos floating around like the one above.
And we are really excited that Ryan Stewart of Adobe is coming all the way from Seattle:
I would like to announce a customer questionnaire that we – the Canoo UltraLightClient team – have prepared and put live today.
Yet another survey? Yes, maybe. But it is a short one, with only 3 questions. And even better, it is a kind of a customer wish list. You as a ULC customer can tell us what features we should add to future ULC releases, what bugs we should fix first and what we should improve in general. This feedback is very important to us as it will help us to improve and address your requirements.
And even better: by participating in this questionnaire, you can win a brand new iPod Touch with Canoo engraving! (Just to show how important your customer feedback is to us ) Just make sure you provide your name, company and email address (so we can notify you about the prize – just in case).
Questionnaire
You can find the questionnaire at http://www.canoo.com/questionnaire. The questionnaire is open until October 24, 2007. The winner of the iPod Touch will be notified on October 26, 2007 by email.
Thank you for helping us to improve UltraLightClient even further – for you, our customers!
(update October 24th) The questionnaire closes today. The questionnaire is no longer accessible.
